This is Follow Jesus Radio, encouraging you to have faith in Jesus Christ and follow Him daily. The title of this devotional thought is: No Room for Boasting.
Ephesians 2:9 (KJV)
"Not of works, lest any man should boast."
There is something deeply rooted in the human heart that longs to earn acceptance. From childhood we are taught that hard work brings rewards, good behavior earns approval, and achievement deserves recognition. While those principles have their place in everyday life, they have no place in our salvation.
The apostle Paul reminds us with unmistakable clarity: "Not of works, lest any man should boast."
The gospel is unlike every man-made religion. Religion says, "Do more. Try harder. Earn God's favor." The gospel says, "Christ has done it all." That is why salvation is entirely by grace. If even the smallest portion depended on our efforts, there would always be room for human pride. We would forever wonder who had done enough and who had fallen short.
But God has designed salvation so that no one can stand before Him and claim credit. Every believer enters the kingdom by the very same door—the grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ and His blood sacrifice on the cross. The strongest believer and the weakest believer, the lifelong Christian and the new convert, the former rebel and the outwardly moral person all stand equally in need of God's mercy.
This truth does not diminish the value of good works; it places them in their proper order. Good works are not the cause of our salvation but the evidence of it. We obey because we have been redeemed, not in order to be redeemed. We serve because Christ first loved us. We pursue holiness because His grace has transformed our hearts.
That reality should produce profound humility. There is no room for spiritual pride when we remember that every blessing we possess has come from God's gracious hand. We cannot boast in our morality, our ministry, our knowledge, or our faithfulness. We boast only in Christ, whose perfect righteousness has become our only hope before a holy God.
Grace also gives weary believers rest. Many Christians quietly carry the burden of feeling they must continually prove themselves worthy of God's love. Yet the cross declares that our acceptance rests not on our fluctuating performance but on Christ's finished work. The same grace that saved us continues to sustain us each day.
So when pride whispers today, "Look what you've accomplished," remember the cross. And when discouragement whispers, "You'll never be good enough," remember the cross again. In both moments, the answer is the same: salvation has never depended upon you. It has always depended upon the perfect work of Jesus Christ.
That is why all glory belongs to God alone.
Ask yourself today: Am I resting in Christ's finished work, or am I subtly trusting my own efforts to earn God's approval?
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for saving me by grace and not by my works. Forgive me for the pride that so easily rises within my heart and for the times I seek to earn what You have already freely given in Christ. Help me to rest in the sufficiency of my Savior, to walk in humble gratitude, and to live a life of joyful obedience that points others to Your amazing grace. May all the glory belong to You alone. Through Jesus Christ my Lord. Amen.
That's it for this podcast. Remember, Jesus loves you and is just a prayer away.
