How do we measure our closeness to God?
In our world today, it is easy to rely on outward things—going to church, carrying a Bible, or wearing a cross. But Jesus reveals that true relationship with Him is not about outward show or empty labels. It is about a heart that hears His Word and actively obeys it.
Consider this defining moment from the life of our Savior:
"And He answered and said unto them, My mother and My brethren are these which hear the word of God, and do it."
— Luke 8:21
What a stunning statement. Jesus defines His closest family—His spiritual kin—not by bloodlines or religious pedigree, but by active obedience. He repeats this beautiful standard in the Gospel of Luke, pointing us to true spiritual happiness:
"But He said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it."
— Luke 11:28
Why does obedience matter so much? It is because our actions reveal the true posture of our hearts.
As Jesus tells us in the Upper Room:
"If ye love Me, keep My commandments. He that hath My commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth Me: and he that loveth Me shall be loved of My Father, and I will love him, and will manifest Myself to him."
— John 14:15, 21
This is why a comfortable, outward-only faith is so dangerous. Jesus warns us plainly that saying the right words is never a substitute for a changed life:
"Not every one that saith unto Me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of My Father which is in heaven."
— Matthew 7:21
True blessing is found when we seek Him with our whole heart, letting His Word guide every single step of our busy routines. As the Psalmist writes:
"Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the LORD. Blessed are they that keep His testimonies, and that seek Him with the whole heart."
— Psalm 119:1-2
If you are listening today and realize you have been settling for an outward religious form while your heart is far from God, you don't have to wait another moment.
